Inspiration ~ Aug-23
New music ~ Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats ~ I’ve always admired Nathaniel Rateliff’s vocals and his songwriting since I heard You Should’ve Seen The Other Guy years ago. His recent album with his band The Night Sweats, has some great melodies, is brilliantly produced (particularly on the title track What If I) and has a gratifying sense of authenticity to it all. I really like it.
Performance ~ Wendlo ~ pure harmonies and classy arrangements from husband and wife duo. The Hall and Oates cover particularly sweet!
Music geek stuff ~ Barbie Girl ~ I picked up this video before we all reached Barbie saturation point but it’s so clever (geeky) it deserves a spot in this section. Aqua’s tune gets smeared through the full stylistic gamut of piano through the centuries. It’s a brilliant example of how a small amount of earwiggish material can be developed into something beautiful and substantive.
Is it a subversive attempt to transduce Barbie’s crie de cour? Her theme sent, by a man, through the prism of a patriarchal western musical tradition? Probably not.
