New music ~ Eloise ~ my ears pricked up when I heard Conor Albert was producing Eloise’s first album Drunk On a Flight. I think there’s an understated genius to his arrangements and some of it comes from his fluency on bass and drums as well as more harmonic / line stuff (he’s a great keys player). Eloise’s writing is witty and melodic and her singing voice feels honest. Link in the picture below is to the title track and this month’s playlist has Therapy which is also a winner.

Performance ~ Bruno Major ~ a brilliant songwriter who has just released a new album, Bruno Major is often used as an example of someone who got screwed over by a ‘major label’ and then did better without them. Here is a few minutes of him playing Easily on the guitar a year or two ago and his new song We Were Never Really Friends is in the playlist to check out.

Music geek stuff ~ Mashups ~ Ed Sheeran’s latest court case (defending himself against the allegation from Marvin Gaye’s estate that Thinking Out Loud was a rip off of Let’s Get It On) led me to a particularly geeky evening of hamfistedly mashing up songs at the piano - the chords to Lionel Ritchie’s Easy work well under Thinking Out Loud and U2’s With Or Without You turns happily into a load of different Beatles songs (most are grateful for the transition….)

A particularly bizarre and gratifying union comes from having Kurt Cobain sing Smells Like Teen Spirit over the instrumental of the Final Countdown by Europe. Have a listen.
