Inspiration ~ Oct22
New music ~ Sweet Baboo ~ Sweet Baboo (Stephen Black) has been a favourite of mine for ages since my mate (hi Avvon) played in his band. He’s a welsh singer songwriter with a quirky pop take and some beautiful ‘real-life’ lyrics - Motorhome made me happy cry. He’s had a bit of a break and I didn’t know he was releasing Good Luck but it popped up and I found myself digging through his old catalogue. I don’t know why he reminds me of Kate Bush. An album is due in January and I really hope some of you on the email list check it out because I think you’ll feel enriched.
Performance ~ Lake Street Dive ~ my friend sent me the track Better Than on the weekend (which is in the playlist for the month) and it immediately struck me I’d been missing out since it was released in 2014. They’re a slightly under the radar group from Boston who’ve been doing it properly since 2005 ish. Rachel Price’s voice is so beautiful and their arrangements are great. This little ding on the Jackson 5’s Want You Back caught my ear. We do this song in Liquid Pigeon, the wedding band we convene now and then though with marginally more tempo and less class.
Music geek stuff ~ Matt Johnson ~ this is a run down of Matt Johnson’s (small) live rig. A bit on the geekier side of geeky here I admit but it’s a chance to just highlight his channel to any keys players as it’s a real treasure trove. He’s been Jamiroquai’s keyboard player for years and is so good at running through his gear, how he approaches things, his playing is obviously golden and he seems like a really bloody lovely guy!
