New music ~ The Bach Choir ~ Bach Inspired is a passion project which was born in the first lockdown of March 2020. Composers James B Wilson, Gavin Higgins, Héloïse Werner, Charlotte Harding, Carmen Ho and Des Oliver were given the challenge of creating one new choral work each based on the St Matthew Passion chorales. The resulting album features these six new works and recordings of the original Bach chorales and sustains a dialogue between the past and present of classical music. The St Matthew Passion is a work of genius and I’ve been interested for some time about identifying and defining the relevance of centuries old music to our modern lives (I think there’s a lot).
The Bach Choir have a performance of the passion coming up on the 10th April at the Royal Festival Hall and a few tickets are still available. I recommend coming!
Performance ~ John Mayer ~ this guy has been a bit of a knob at times but you can’t deny his playing. This from way back is some saucy blues trio. Mayer on guitar and vocals with the sort of legendary Pino Palladino on bass with Steve Jordan playing drums.
Music geek stuff ~ practise ~ Nicola Benedetti reminds us to practise… OK so she's potentially on the more intimidating end of the attainment scale, but she didn’t get that good overnight. And actually even at slightly less lofty levels the practise itself can be very rewarding despite the goal (or indeed absence of one). Whether it’s piano, painting, curling, writing, breathing or cooking - regular focussed practise makes you get better and often just makes you feel better for having done it.
