New music ~ NAO ~ I got into NAO a few years ago when she was the worst kept secret in London with everyone wondering why she wasn’t signed and global. Since then she has been very much signed (Little Tokyo/RCA) and has gone global (Brits, Mercury, Grammy!) and did a super cool colab with Lianne La Havas who is also awesome. Messy Love will be on her third album and I love the straightforward R&B beat with her smooth vocal style over
Performance ~ Billy Preston on Jools Holland ~ Billy Preston was a bit of a legend in the hay-day of soul; he played on evvvverything (Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, the Stones, The Beatles, Joe Cocker etc etc). But here he’s jamming with Jools holland on the Hammond organ and they both look like they’re having the BEST time. Dreamy stuff.
Music geek stuff ~ The Most Elegant Key Change in Pop ~ three reasons to include this i) Celine Dion singing the key change bit in All By Myself is glorious stuff, ii) it’s based on Rachmaninov’s 2nd piano concerto (2nd mov) which I’ve put in the playlist this month because it has some really beautiful melodies in it and iii) this breakdown from Adam Neely is brilliant and definitely fits the ‘music geek’ bill.
