Inspiration ~ Apr21
New music ~ Matt Carmichael ~ a beautiful debut album from Scottish sax player Matt Carmichael. I really had goosebumps at moments on first listen. The deeper you go with it the more you get the sincerity of the playing and recording. Simple celtic folk melodies really sing without getting overwhelmed by complex playing (though there are some gloriously obscure moments). I’ve linked to a version of ‘Dear Grandma’ but also put ‘Hopeful Morning’ in the playlist - highly recommend an early coffee and this on some decent headphones. Totally authentic and very moving; a really special record.
Performance ~ Cody Fry - Better ~ as close to the perfect funk-pop arrangement as I’ve found recently. Horns are amazing, hot BVs, killer bass part, weird harmonic breakdown bit with a screeching solo and Cory Wong on rhythm guitar grooving the whole thing like a young Nile Rogers. Just so good - oh to spend an hour in this band, playing shaker or something... Also check out Golden which I’ve put in this month’s playlist - another corker.
Music geek stuff ~ Jacob Collier harmonising Yebba Smith’s Bridge Over Troubled Water vocal ~ Collier can get a bit ‘much’ to us mere mortals but this is a gorgeous minute of reharm and I’ve no idea why Yebba is still unsigned and not releasing music - she’s incredible.
