New music ~ Jalen Ngoda ~ blown away by the vocals on this modern day Marvin Gaye. Come Around and Love Me here.

Performance ~ Kelly Joe Phelps ~ in Paris for some rugby with old friends I was reminded i) that lots has changed since we were at uni, ii) that not much has changed since we were at uni and iii) why Owen and I used to sit around listening to Kelly Joe Phelps. Big hearted, beautiful, soulful music. This simple version of Goodnight Irene showcases his skill on the slide guitar, his voice and how much emotion the two together can convey. Check out Roll Away the Stone in the playlist - my favourite of his.

Music geek stuff ~ Neuroplasticity ~ I like the idea that music is medicine. A project that is sadly in a bit of an extended hiatus since COVID brought live music to hospital patients and the data collected showed its broadly positive impact.

It sounds a bit hippy ( a few doctors let that view be known) and no I wouldn’t want someone playing the recorder at my dislocated shoulder, but music therapy can do much more than improve mood. The point is well made in this article, “Music being a multimodal entity, engaging perception, cognition, and motor control in the brain (Koshimori & Thaut, 2019), serves as an effective medium for rehabilitating impaired neurological functions through employing multiple relevant neural circuits that are relatively preserved in the individual.”

In layman’s terms: music can help reconnect the dots for brains with impaired function. This video shows how music therapy helped a stroke victim learn to talk again.
