New music ~ James Blake ~ the latest bit of genius from Mr Blake. Typically classy sound design / mix and some beautiful strings parts.
Performance ~ Corinne Bailey Rae ~ listening back to Norah Jones’s seminal and timeless “Come Away With Me” this week I went down a bit of a youtube wormhole past a variety of classy chanteuses. This performance of “Like A Star” on Jools Holland back in 2005 is still just a total pleasure.
Music geek stuff ~ The Lion King ~ not just a coming of age tale of destiny, grief and the fragility of social hierachy, the Lion King also has an incredible Hans Zimmer score between the Elton John songs. The passage of music titled “To Die For…” on the soundtrack takes you through a Wilderbeast stampede, self-sacrificing parental love, fratricide, isolation and retribution. It has one of my favourite ever chords in it as Mufasa drags himself to apparent safety (1.49 in the track) and a melody Mozart would be proud of. I did an approximate transcription of the slow melody bit which is below if you want to have a go (it was a quiet evening…):
